The Benefits of Spinal Decompression

Have you been living in pain? Spinal decompression therapy in Edmonton, AB, can help.

Dr. Christopher Oviatt and Dr. Michelle Martinook of Castledowns Chiropractic Clinic offer a variety of chiropractic treatments including spinal decompression therapy in Edmonton, AB, to ease your pain.

What Is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal decompression therapy is also known as nonsurgical decompression, and it is a non-invasive treatment that gently stretches the spine using motorized equipment or a traction table. It can help if you are suffering from arthritis, spinal injuries, herniated discs, pain from surgery, and posterior facet syndrome by relieving pain in the back or legs. It works by easing the pressure placed on the nerves and spine.

How Does Your Chiropractor Perform Spinal Decompression Therapy?

When you come into our office for spinal decompression therapy, your chiropractor will ask you to lay down on a decompression table. This table will use traction to gently reposition your spine. Your chiropractor will control the speed of the movement electronically. They can adjust the amount of pressure that is placed on your muscles. Depending on your case, you will have several 30-minute sessions over the course of a month.

Is Spinal Decompression Therapy Safe?

Your expert chiropractors will ensure that the procedure is done safely, but some patients are not good candidates for spinal decompression therapy. It is generally not recommended for patients who have cancer, a fractured bone, severe osteoporosis, spine implants, or are pregnant.

You will feel some pressure during treatment, but you should not feel any pain. We have sensors to ensure that your muscles are not being stretched too far to keep you safe and comfortable.

The majority of patients notice some pain relief after the first few treatments, with many experiencing the most significant reduction in back pain within the second week of treatment. Spinal decompression may even be used in conjunction with other treatments such as hot and cold therapies, electrical stimulation, or ultrasound to help promote more effective pain relief.
